Makeup Monday: The Power of Red

Writer's picture: Dani SauterDani Sauter

Happy Monday, Fashion Friends! Today's Makeup Monday post is all about red lips, as requested by a friend and reader! The question specifically was: "How to keep red lipstick to stay on and stay shiny?" I absolutely love to wear red lipstick, and have found a few very easy tips that have worked for me when applying red lipstick that enhance wear time. Here's my guide to long lasting matte or shiny red lips:

What you'll need:

1. A lip pencil primer (I use the NYX Cosmetics Wonder pencil, $4.50 at NYX )

2. A bold red lip liner (I used Bobbi Brown Art Stick in Harlow Red $26 at Sephora here, but also love Dior Contour Lipliner Pencil in 999, $30 at Sephora)

3. A tissue/paper towel

4. Optional- a clear lip gloss (Buxom Full-On Lip Polish in Amanda- Crushed Diamonds, $19 at Sephora is a good pick!)

Steps:

1. Apply lip pencil primer to lips. The lip primer will help the color last longer and avoid color bleeding.

2. Apply red lip liner. Start by lining your outer lips (I tend to draw the liner a little bigger than my lips actually are to look bigger), then draw the rest in.

3. Blot your lips with tissue/paper towel and reapply red liner over blotted lips.

4. Trace your lips with the lip primer to fix any smudges from the red lip liner. This will also enhance your lips!

5. Leave as is for a matte look, or apply a clear lip gloss on top of the liner for a glossy/shiny look. If you're hitting the town for cocktails or going to dinner, bring the liner and gloss with you for touch-ups throughout the evening if needed.

XOXO
