WONDER-ful

Just when I thought my love of free DC museums couldn't get any bigger, I was wrong. After finally going to the newly opened Renwick Gallery for the WONDER exhibit, my love for DC's free museums and inspiring art scene has tripled. The Renwick Gallery is part of the Smithsonian American Art Museum and is the first building in the United States built specifically to be an art museum (pretty cool, right?). The gallery has undergone a number of renovations in the previous years, and the idea for the WONDER exhibit was based on the gallery space itself after the museum was bare from its previous exhibits. The renovation for WONDER took two years and features nine large scale art installations from contemporary artists. The art installations are made from various materials such as index cards, wood, thread, tires, even marbles, and truly leave you in wonder of such impressive and out of the box art.

Yesterday, I braved the cold and masses of Washingtonians also eager to see WONDER with my blogger friend Vivi, of Heart Print and Style. Despite the cold and masses of people, we were able to check out most of the museum and it was WELL worth the trip. Each exhibit did leave me with a sense of wonder, constantly asking myself "What was the inspiration?" "How did they come up with this?" "How did they make this?"; and it also left me with sheer utter amazement. This exhibit is best seen through your own eyes, and take it from me when I say you definitely will not be disappointed.

When we went, the museum was jam packed, so we did not get to see all of the museum due to long lines. On the way out I asked one of the security guards what days are best to avoid crowds and he said the weekdays are the best option. After my experience yesterday, I encourage you to visit on a weekday, so you have more time, avoid lines, and aren't being jostled around in the crowds. If you're interested in checking it out, do so soon! The exhibits are on view only through May and July of this year, so make your plans now! And for a final note- bring your camera! The gallery encourages photos and social media tags! For more information, visit http://renwick.americanart.si.edu/.
